The 3D record

Every film released in 3D

How each one was made in stereo, the formats it exists in, and whether you can still watch it today. Every figure on this page is counted from the catalogue, and every fact on every page carries the address it came from.

Three waves, and the size of each

3D has arrived and collapsed three times. The shape only becomes visible once the whole record is counted in one place, and the third wave dwarfs the two before it:652 of the 1,045 films here were released in the 2010s alone.

Counted from 1,045 catalogued films. Chinese domestic releases are outside the boundary of this record, which is stated on every page that depends on it.

Shot in stereo, or converted afterwards

The question enthusiasts actually argue about, and the one most databases reduce to a yes or no. 3DIQ publishes no score for it. It records what was done, names the company that did it, and links to where that was established.

What is missing

Gaps are stated rather than hidden. A page that looks complete because the blanks were left out is worse than one that admits where the record stops, and these are the two places it stops most.

426films with no provenance recorded. Nothing yet establishes whether they were shot in stereo or converted afterwards.
752films with no home release recorded. For a great many of them there has never been one, which is the more interesting answer.

Recently catalogued

Posters via TMDB, where TMDB holds one.

Most of what was released in 3D has never been available in 3D at home, in any region, on any format. 3DIQ is counting what survives and what does not.
